Hearing calls for safety after worker deaths

The deaths of two Linden laundry workers, overcome by chemical fumes last month while cleaning a tank, yesterday brought a Congressional subcommittee to that city to hear calls for empowering workers to help police workplace safety -- and imposing tougher sanctions on employers who endanger the lives of their workers. Federal Chemical Plant Rules Inadequate, NJ Coalition of Labor Unions & Environmentalists Urge Improvements

Department of Homeland Security has determined the nation’s 7,000 highest risk facilities for a terrorist attack

Trenton – As the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that it has determined the 7,000 highest risk facilities for a terrorist attack, the NJ Work Environment Council (WEC), a coalition of 70 labor, community, and environmental organizations, criticized DHS today stating that the interim federal rules fail to address the real dangers that chemical plants pose to the public.
